ANGEL'S FOOD – Restaurant

The counter opens at five on weekday mornings, which tells you exactly what kind of place this is: a working Cuban bakery on East Fourth Avenue in Hialeah, filed with the state under the Angeles Food name. Pastry case first, with guava pastelitos, croquetas for pocket change, papa rellena, tequenos, Galician empanadas and pizza pastel. Then the plancha: Cubano, medianoche, pan con bistec, pan con lechon, pan con tortilla and choripan, every one of them pressed to order. Cortadito and cafe con leche go out by the tray, alongside guarapo, batidos and fresh juice. Breakfast, then lunch, then it's done.
