Whole food is soul food is the motto, and Blue Tree Cafe means it — a small vegan soul-food kitchen on Northwest 9th Avenue run by a mother-and-daughter team. Order ahead or at the window; there is no dining room, and no cash is taken. The build-your-own Blue Soul Bowl is the draw: barbecue or spicy barbecue mushrooms, grilled mushrooms with onions, or crispy cauliflower over two sides — collard greens, cabbage, mac and cheese, candied yams, plantains, rice — with a cornbread muffin. Rasta pasta, crabless balls, chili and sweet potato pie round it out. Midweek only, worth planning.
