Borekas (Sherman Oaks) – Restaurant

Borekas Sephardic Pastries works out of a takeout window on Ventura Boulevard, turning out Israeli-style pastries rolled long, baked until the edges brown, then sliced across. Four fillings anchor the counter: feta and spinach, mushroom and truffle, ricotta and za'atar, and brown butter with potato. Every order is boxed with a hard-boiled egg, pickles, tomato pulp and red schug, meant to be mashed together as you eat. The kosher kitchen opens early, closes for Shabbat, and can sell out; regulars call ahead so the pastry stays hot. Parking is busy and seating is very limited. Order more than one variety.
