CHEZ LOUISE RESTAURANT – French
Haitian home cooking on North Miami Avenue, served from mid-morning until night. The counter moves fast: fried griot with plantains, fried goat, oxtails, turkey in sauce, poisson fri and steamed fish, legume ladled over rice, callalou stewed with beef. Sides do real work here, from diri djon djon and cornmeal to brown rice with red beans, akra, patties and a sharp pikliz. Soup joumou and bouillon anchor the soup list. Wash it down with Couronne or a yucca smoothie. Regulars come back for the seasoning and for the sheer size of the plates. Unfussy, and recognisably the food of Haiti.
