Eshel – Restaurant
On Columbus Avenue on the Upper West Side, Eshel serves Persian cooking that runs on saffron, char, and patience. Grilled skewers of saffron chicken and ground beef koobideh anchor the menu, alongside lamb arayes: ground lamb packed into warm pita and grilled until the edges crisp, served with tahini and an herb salad. Tahdig arrives as it should, a slab of golden, crackling rice set over a tomato and split pea stew. Jeweled rice, dressed with candied orange peel, barberries, and nuts, pairs with either protein. Kosher under OU certification, it is currently the only kosher Persian kitchen in Manhattan.
