FRANCES – Restaurant

Three businesses under one roof on Palm Avenue in Hialeah: a small Cuban dining room, a bakery counter and a gelateria. The andaluz sandwich is the one to know — pork or chicken with fried peppers, muenster, serrano ham and a fried egg on a French baguette or Cuban bread. Breakfast runs to Cuban omelets and toast, with the pastry case filling the gaps. House-made gelato closes it out, the pistachio nutty and faintly salted, and custom cakes come from the same kitchen, some of them startlingly lifelike. Cheap, versatile, and good at all three jobs.
