Hungry Howie's built its name on the crust. Since 1973, when Jim Hearn turned a small Michigan hamburger shop into a carryout-and-delivery pizzeria, the chain has sold itself as the home of the Flavored Crust: eight edge treatments, from butter and butter cheese to asiago, ranch, cajun, sesame, garlic herb and Italian herb, chosen at the point of order. The pizzas run from the loaded Howie Special to the Meat Eaters, alongside calzone-style oven-baked subs folded from pizza dough, Howie Bread, Howie Wings and fresh salads. Regulars order the same way every time: pick a crust, add wings, done. The rim is the point.
