Chef Javier Chino cooked in California kitchens for over a decade before opening Mi Tierra on South Volusia Avenue in 2002, and the menu still runs on that Mexican-by-way-of-California playbook. Sizzling fajitas come out loud; the tamales are made in house and wrapped in the corn husk; crispy tacos, enchiladas and big combination platters do the rest, with birria tacos and chimichangas among the things people order on repeat. Chips, salsa and pico land free at the table. Portions are large, prices are fair, and the staff make a fuss of big groups.
