Askaneli sits on the water at Southeast Fifth Avenue, a Georgian restaurant and steakhouse that never underplays anything. Adjarian khachapuri arrives boat-shaped, filled with cheese, butter and an egg. Khinkali come stuffed with ground veal and pork, flavoured with onion and herbs, with a strawberry dessert version if you want one. Beyond that: Georgian kebabs, grilled octopus, steaks, a cheese board drawing on Georgia and Europe, homemade Napoleon to finish. Evenings run to guitar, jazz, blues and karaoke, and the plush, velvet-heavy room has a patio and billiard tables. Wine tastings and comedy nights too. Loud, generous and unmistakably Georgian.
