BABA ON CENTRAL – Restaurant

A former mechanic's shop in Historic Kenwood, remade by Debbie and Sayegh Sayegh into a 150-seat Mediterranean restaurant, bakery and cafe with an edible garden out back. Debbie designed the room herself, and an evil-eye mural by artist Chad Mize watches over it. The kitchen leans Greek and Levantine: hummus crowned with fried okra, Aleppo chilli jam and chilli oil, then a fritto misto of calamari, shrimp and vegetables. Herbs are cut from the garden. The bakery case runs to banana bread bars with tahini buttercream and pistachios, and ricotta with pear and pine nut. Central Avenue, indoors or out.
