BAVARO'S CLEARWATER – Italian
The Clearwater Beach outpost of a Tampa Bay Neapolitan family, a block off the sand on Mandalay Avenue, with a coffee bar of its own opening at eight each morning. Pizza bakes at nine hundred degrees, which is why the Margherita and the tre-carne with fennel sausage, soppressata and prosciutto cotto arrive soft-centred and blistered. Pasta is made from scratch: penne alla vodka, cheese ravioli, tagliatelle bolognese, a seafood spaghetti with gulf shrimp and middleneck clams. Wood-roasted gulf oysters and honeyed Calabrian wings start things off. Half-price beer and tap wine weekday afternoons. The kitchen runs until ten on weekends.
