CAFE DEMETRIO – Restaurant
Cafe Demetrio opened in 1997 in the 1920s premises of Coral Gables' first newspaper, and has been called the city's first coffee house ever since. Demetrio and Vilma Pina built it on the European model, a room where poets, artists and working people could sit a while. The patio, with its chess boards, is where regulars settle. Food is sandwich-led: churrasco steak on toasted baguette with fresh mozzarella, arugula and chimichurri; prosciutto di parma with feta and figs; grilled chicken with applewood bacon, muenster and chipotle aioli. Baked empanadas sit alongside them. Coffee anchors the whole enterprise. Closed on Sundays.
