CAROLINES CAFE – Restaurant
Open on Duval Street since 1999, in the shadow of the historic Porter House, and named for the corner it sits on. The raised seating is the draw, and the people-watching that comes with it. The kitchen stays Key West: conch fritters loaded with island spice, dolphin fingers with tartar, peel-and-eat shrimp cooked in Caribbean spices and chilled. The fried fish sandwich is the house standard. Caribbean steak arrives with fried plantains, black beans and rice; the fisherman's fresh catch is grilled or blackened. Key lime pie is made in-house. Cocktails and an unhurried island charm handle all the rest.
