CHINA WOK – Restaurant
Sheridan Street, Hollywood, in the Westlake Commons plaza — a takeout counter whose printed menu quietly outruns its neighbours. Openers include cream cheese fried wonton, N.Y.-style boneless spareribs, snow donuts and popcorn chicken with sriracha on the side. Fried rice comes small, large or jumbo, Young Chow made with less oil and salt. The chef's list is where it lands: ma po tofu, salt and pepper shrimp, coconut jumbo shrimp, house special eggplant in garlic sauce, Mongolian delight, dragon and phoenix, and a half boneless duck twice cooked in aromatic spices. Singapore noodles too. Straightforward, and rather better than expected.
