Downtown Sanford wakes up on East First Street, where the Colonial Room serves breakfast from half past six and closes after lunch. This is Southern home cooking without ceremony: two eggs any style with country ham, corned beef hash or a Delmonico steak, sausage gravy over biscuits, Belgian waffles with pecans, stewed apples and grits on the side. Lunch turns to a fried green tomato BLT, hot turkey under mashed potatoes and gravy, patty melts, chuck wagon steak, grilled beef liver and homemade chili.
