Scratch cooking in a family-owned room on West Second Street in downtown Sanford, where the District Eatery Tap & Barrel sets new American plates beside craft beer and cocktails. Starters make the case: bone marrow canoe with hot pepper jam, spicy crab wontons, sesame-crusted yellowfin, burrata with ten-year balsamic, mussels in chardonnay garlic cream. Entrees run to filet au poivre, Gulf black grouper over lemon parmesan risotto, Nawlins-style redfish on an andouille grit cake, Alaskan black cod and a bourbon-brined bone-in pork chop.
