Down Island sits on US Highway 98 in Santa Rosa Beach, a Gulf seafood room built around chef Brannon Janca's own hands. He throws, glazes, and fires the water glasses and dinnerware, and the walls carry Gulf Coast artwork, vintage concert posters, and music memorabilia from his own personal collection, alongside driftwood gathered off the barrier islands. The kitchen turns out coastal seafood plates in a laid-back, art-filled dining room that opens nightly at five. Guests describe the atmosphere as unlike anywhere else along 30A, equal parts gallery and dinner table. Reservations are taken by phone, seven nights a week.
