Afternoon light through wooden blinds, family photographs on wood-panelled walls, ceiling fans working hard - La Vina Aragon has fed Hialeah since the 1980s and has felt no need to modernise. The cooking is Cuban home cooking taken seriously: pan cubano rubbed with garlic, pollo empanizado with breading that crackles, vaca frita sharp with vinegar and garlic, ropa vieja in a deep tomato sauce, ham croquetas handed out through the ventanita with a colada. Breakfast stays cheap and the room stays full. Bring cash - they take nothing else.
