Out on US 19 in Palm Harbor, Nueva Cantina is a taqueria built around a trompo and a margarita machine. Pork al pastor is shaved off the spit with grilled pineapple; birria barbacoa tacos come griddled with melted cheese and a cup of consomé for dipping. Start with queso fundido and Mexican chorizo, street corn on the cob or shaved into a cup, or flautas stuffed with chicken and poblano. Weekday happy hour from two until six keeps the bar three deep. Regulars come for the birria and the sheer volume of the room. Loud, bright, unapologetic.
