An A. Philip Randolph Boulevard fixture since 2003, The Avenue Grill opens at eight and cooks all day. It is locally owned, wholly unpretentious and built on fried chicken, the thing the kitchen is best known for, plus burgers, wings, fried shrimp and fish, and Philly cheesesteaks off the flat-top. Breakfast rolls straight into lunch and dinner without a change of gear. Counter service, takeout and delivery, and a steady stream of regulars from the surrounding neighbourhood. Closed Sundays, and Saturdays wind down by mid-afternoon. Nothing here is trying to be new, which is precisely why Jacksonville keeps showing up.
