BIG JOE – Restaurant

North Beach got a smashburger counter on Collins Avenue and Big Joe has run it hard since, open to one in the morning midweek and two at weekends. Certified Angus beef, hand-pressed until the edges go lacy and brown, then built: grilled onions, American cheese, pickles and Joe's sauce on brioche, or bacon, or jalapenos with chipotle ranch, or Coca-Cola bacon jam. The bun is negotiable. A glazed donut and a croissant both take patties, and the four-patty, four-bacon OMFG exists. Monster fries carry a whole burger's toppings. Waffles and thick milkshakes finish it off. Late, loud and thoroughly unrepentant.
