CASTRO'S CAFE – Mexican
A small-town Florida cafe on Broadway Boulevard in Polk City, open at seven and shut by two most days, built by the Castro family on coffee and Cuban bread. The beans are custom-roasted by an Orlando roaster; sandwiches are pressed on La Segunda bread with deli meat sliced in house. There is the Authentic Tampa Cuban, the Cowboy Cuban under house spiced barbecue sauce, and the Castro's Special, a Puerto Rican tripleta with plantain stix. Four house sauces to argue over. An in-house micro bakery turns out quesitos, turnovers and muffins. Coquito lattes, cafecito, frappes. Two years in, still family-run.
