Hungry Howie's started in 1973 as a small carryout pizzeria in suburban Detroit and has kept that character: order, wait a beat, take it home. The distinguishing move is the flavored crust, eight of them — butter, butter cheese, asiago, ranch, cajun, sesame, garlic herb and Italian herb — seasoned along the rim so the crust is never an afterthought. Specialty pizzas include the Howie Special and the Meat Eaters; the calzone-style oven-baked subs, Howie Bread, Howie Wings, Howie Rolls and fresh salads fill the rest.
