HUNGRY HOWIE'S – Restaurant

Founded in 1973 by Jim Hearn, who converted a hamburger shop in Taylor, Michigan, Hungry Howie's grew into a national pizza chain on the back of one innovation. Flavored crust: eight seasonings brushed along the edge at order, including butter, butter cheese, asiago, ranch, cajun, sesame, garlic herb and Italian herb. The kitchen also turns out calzone-style oven-baked subs — pizza dough stuffed, folded and baked — along with Howie Bread, Howie Wings, fresh salads and desserts. Specialty pizzas such as the Howie Special get the most traffic. Customers cite speed and price. Cheap, fast, and the crust actually matters.
