Tropical Hut - Jaka Plaza – restaurant

The Jaka Plaza branch of Tropical Hut, one of the oldest home-grown food chains in the Philippines -- older here than both Jollibee and McDonald's. The counter runs on hamburgers, rice meals and club sandwiches, the same short, unchanging repertoire that has outlasted a lot of flashier arrivals. This branch stays open around the clock, which makes it as much a late-shift canteen as a lunch stop. Filipinos talk about it the way people talk about food they grew up on: plain, familiar, still exactly right. No reinvention required.
