Cuban baking exactly as it has been done since 1972, when Antonio and Gelasia Cao — exiles who met working in a Havana bakery — opened the first Vicky in Hialeah. The Ave Maria shop carries the same recipes, handed down within the family and never rewritten: pastelitos pulled from the oven all day in flaky golden layers, croquetas and bocaditos by the tray, sandwiches pressed on Cuban bread, cafecito and café con leche to go with them. Breakfast runs all day. Custom cakes are made to order, and the refresquitos handle the Florida afternoon. Still family-run, fifty years on.
