Zabar's – Restaurant
Zabar's has been an Upper West Side fixture for generations, and the counter tells you why: hand-sliced Nova and belly lox, whitefish salad, bagels, babka and a cheese case that runs down the wall. The coffee is roasted under their own name, the smoked-fish men have been behind that counter for decades, and the cafe next door turns the same ingredients into a plate you can sit down with. Regulars call it the last honest appetizing store in the city. Go on a Sunday morning if you want the full experience — and expect a line.
