COOPER PLACE – Restaurant

Out on the Tamiami Trail at the edge of the Everglades, this roadside room grew out of a stand John Cooper's brother opened in the 1940s to feed airboat passengers sodas, sandwiches and fresh Glades frog legs. Frog legs are still the reason people stop: half a pound on the Jumper Plate with slaw and garlic bread, a full pound on the Platter, or paired with gator tail on the Everglades combination dinner. Catfish, shrimp, fried chicken and a chicken bacon ranch sandwich fill out the card. Gator bites come as a sampler. Old Florida, unhurried, open daily until five.
