An Argentine empanada counter tucked into the underground market beneath Eighth Avenue near Columbus Circle, open every day and easy to walk straight past. Everything is baked rather than fried, and the fillings are serious: grass-fed Malbec beef with olives and caramelized onions is the signature, alongside smoky BBQ chicken, spinach with asiago, a four-cheese fugazzeta, funghi built on shiitake, cremini and white mushrooms, vegan creamy corn, caprese, ham and cheese. Assorted alfajores wait for afterwards. No plates, no cutlery, nothing to sit down for, just hot pastry in your hand. Catering and drop-off orders travel right across the city.
