The original. Fred's Market started in Plant City in 1954, when Elton and Evelyn Johnson found that Evelyn's cooking was drawing more people to their gas station than the gas was. Seventy years on, the restaurant still runs on Southern family dining: weekday and weekend breakfast menus, then lunch and dinner built on slow-cooked, unprocessed, farm-to-plate cooking. Kids eat free Monday through Friday. Regulars talk about the sheer breadth of what comes out of that kitchen and the ease of the room around it. A Plant City tradition that never needed reinventing.
