Since 2001, $1.50 Fresh Pizza has run counters from Broadway and West 40th to Lexington, Canal Street and Chambers, all built on the same logic: a broad eighteen-inch cheese slice pulled from the oven, folded, eaten standing up. A cheese slice is still a dollar fifty; two of them with a drink runs four dollars. Beyond that sit pepperoni, buffalo chicken, chicken ranch and Hawaiian slices, whole pies, and Jamaican beef patties. Most counters stay open until nearly dawn. Nobody comes for ceremony. It is cheap, fast New York pizza, unbothered by that.
