Downtown Sarasota, South Lemon Avenue, doors at four and the restaurant bar filling first. BESO cooks Spanish tapas properly, two or three plates a person as the menu itself advises. Pintxos run from pan con tomate to boquerones in orange-chilli salsa, chicken liver pate with currant confit, sobrassada with marcona almonds. Then patatas bravas, tortilla espanola, fried artichokes, escalivada, gambas al ajillo, clams with chorizo, octopus in paprika vinaigrette, lamb pinchos morunos, beef cheek braised in PX sherry. The paella is slow-simmered, so order it on arrival. Churros con chocolate, flan and Basque cheesecake after. Reservations are the sensible move.
