In 2018, a San Diego jury awarded 105 million dollars, later reduced substantially on appeal, to a former patient named Dawn Kali, who testified Young persuaded her to forgo conventional treatment for breast cancer in favor of his program, including baking soda infusions, during which her cancer progressed to an incurable stage.[2]
That single case remains one of the more sobering examples found anywhere in this entire series of how a dietary theory, when promoted aggressively enough and marketed as a cure for serious disease, can cause real and serious harm well beyond the ordinary nutritional tradeoffs most other diets covered here involve for the people who choose to follow them.

A real, if smaller, financial risk also exists: alkaline water machines, ionizers, pH test strips, and related supplements marketed alongside this diet represent avoidable expense for products with no demonstrated benefit beyond what an ordinary, produce forward healthy diet already provides on its own without any specialty equipment or additional purchases involved.
None of this means increasing fruit and vegetable intake is unwise, since that general direction is well supported by entirely separate, more rigorous research covered elsewhere in this series; the criticism here targets the specific pH based rationale and its more dangerous medical claims specifically, not the general, well established idea of eating more plants as part of a balanced overall diet.
