Madame Sousou Cafe – cafe

A small Astoria corner café at 31-05 33rd Street, open early and staying open late, and one of the more dependable places in the neighbourhood to sit for an hour with a laptop or a newspaper. The counter runs espresso, chai lattes and frappes alongside a pastry case that turns over fast: butter and almond croissants, kouign-amann, simit, lemon pound cake, key lime pie and a chocolate mousse people order without pretending it is breakfast. There is a mushroom quiche for anyone wanting something savoury. Regulars praise the calm room and the unhurried welcome. Astoria's easiest hour.
