Pembroke Pines gets its cafecito from a bakery that has been doing this since 1972. Vicky started as a small Hialeah shop bought by Antonio and Gelasia Cao, Cuban exiles who had met working in a Havana bakery, and the recipes have stayed inside the family ever since. The counter runs on pastelitos baked in flaky layers all day, croquetas, bocaditos, sandwiches pressed on Cuban bread and coffee served the traditional way. Custom cakes are made in-house; catering trays go out by the armload. Refresquitos cool the afternoon. Some things genuinely don't need updating.
